Title I and ESEA

What Is Title I and How Can It Help My Child?

Title I is a federally funded education program that works to give all children a chance to learn at higher academic standards. Its purpose is to prevent failure by providing support that ensures more children experience success in school.

Sometimes children need additional assistance to meet the standards set forth by the state of Maine.  Title I Schoolwide assist identifies students who:

  • Challenges with pholongical awareness/phonics

  • Have difficulty reading grade level text

  • Have difficulty understanding what they have read

  • Have difficulty with math (problem solving, math applications, fact fluency)

Student Eligibility

All K-5 students are eligible for Schoolwide Title I Services at Fort Fairfield Elementary.  Students are eligible for Title I services based on data which may include the following:

  • Teacher recommendation/observation

  • Reading or math skills below grade level

  • Reading assessment results from classroom assessments

  • Reading screeners

  • Math Assessment results in NWEA/Maine Through Years and Everyday Math End of Year Assessments

  • Class performance

All students are assessed at the end of each school year.  Students not achieving grade level benchmarks are rescreened at the beginning of each school year to determine eligibity and recommendations for intervention.  Students who are not achieving at grade level may receive direct intervention or be placed on a monitoring program and followed by Title I staff.

All students served in Title I are referred for services based on a combination of factors above. Students may be referred at any time during the school year.  Students receiving Title I interventions are assessed periodically throughout the school to provide progress monitoring opportunities for student achievement.

All students will be exposed to grade level content standards. Classroom and Title I teachers will work together to support all children succeed in the regular curriculum. Additional assistance and supplemental materials will be given to students having difficulty mastering state academic content standards.
