All eligible students have the right to receive a free apprproriate public education (FAPE) that is tailored to meet their individual learning needs. Each student is educated alongside non-disabled peers to the greatest extent appropriate.  Student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) is thoughtfully developed by the student’s educational team to support meaningful progress within their least restrictive environment based on the student’s academic and functional needs. Through the team approach, students are provided access to the general education curriculum and supported in progressing through their educational program with peers.

When students receive the academic and functional program support they need to succeed, they are able to fully participate in learning, build confidence, develop positive relationships, and gain the skills needed to become independent and contributing members of their communities.

In keeping with our school’s commitment to educatiing every child, our program focuses on:

  • Understanding each student’s current strengths and learning needs to support student achievement
  • Identify challenges that may affect learning
  • Creating individualized education plans that support student success
  • Providing classroom supports and accommodations that encourage inclusion with peers
  • Offering specialized instruction when additional support is needed
  • Regularly monitoring student progress and celebrating growth
  • Helping students build skills that prepare them for future educational opportunities, employment, and independent living

We believe that every child deserves to be respected, supported, and valued. Special Eduation is meeting students where they are at and supporting them in reaching their full potential.

Notice About Special Education Records

RSU 86/MSAD 20 must notify students/parents when the school has determined that special education records are no longer needed to provide a student with a free, appropriate, public education as required according to Chapter 101, the Maine Special Education Regulations.

Records will be destroyed at the end of the school year when a student would turn 26. If you wish to obtain these records you should contact the School Department at 472-3277. These records may be useful in the future if an application is made for federal benefits.

RSU 86/MSAD 20 will permanently keep digitalized records of the student's most recent IEP, the Written Notice or Minutes of that meeting, a Summary of Performance, and the most recent evaluations.

The School Department shall maintain, permanently, a record of the student's name, address, phone number, grades, attendance record, classes attended, grade level completed and year completed.
